Brain Stroke

The stroke, otherwise called a Brain Attack occurs when the blood supply to the brain is cut off or blocked, or disrupted. This leads to the death of brain cells like cells in the brain canโ€™t survive without a constant supply of oxygen and nutrients. The death of brain cells can impair brain function and cause impaired speech, memory, thinking movements, and other physical functions. In acute cases, such situations could lead to paralysis or even death.

Types of Brain Stroke

Stroke is mainly categorized into two types-

  • Ischemic strokes
  • Hemorrhagic strokes

Ischemic stroke occurs when the blood vessels that supply blood to the brain are blocked. It is divided into two parts:

  • Thrombotic Strokes: It occurs when the blood clot develops in the blood vessels of the brain.
  • Embolic Strokes: It occurs when the blood clot from other parts of the body travel to the brain.

Hemorrhagic stroke occurs when the blood vessels supplying the blood to the brain gets ruptured and bleeds to an extent.

  • Intracerebral Haemorrhage: It occurs when there is bleeding from blood vessels in the brain.
  • Subarachnoid Haemorrhage: It occurs when there is bleeding from the space exists between the brain & membranes covering the brain.

Signs & Symptoms of Brain Strokeย 

  • Confusion, trouble while speaking & understanding
  • Difficulty in seeing and vision
  • Headache aided by altered consciousness or vomiting
  • Numbness ( lack of sensation ) in the face, arm and leg, especially on one side of the body
  • Difficulty in walking and bodily imbalance

Causes of Brain Stroke

  • High blood pressure
  • Smoking or chewing of tobacco regularly
  • Heart complications
  • Diabetes
  • Obesity or Excess weight
  • Aging ( over 50 years)
  • Men are more vulnerable to women

Treatment

The first step in treating a stroke is to stop the bleeding by some medical or surgical method. The site of bleeding can be detected by several diagnostic methods. The blood clot is removed by the surgery. But the emergency treatment provided by the stroke unit depends on the type of stroke the patient is experiencing.
